HOW TO CHOOSE THE PROPER SWIMSUIT FOR YOUR BABY

15-03-2024

Choosing the proper swimsuit for your baby is important. With so much choice out there we know it can be confusing and overwhelming.

But don’t worry!

In this blog, we share the factors you need to consider when buying your baby’s swimsuit.

1️⃣ Bright Colors

Opting for bright-colored swimsuits isn't just a matter of looks, it's a critical safety measure. Bright colors like neon green, hot pink, or bright blue make it easier to keep an eye on your water baby in crowded pool areas or beaches. They stand out in the water, making it quicker to spot your baby if they move away from you.

2️⃣ Indoor vs. Outdoor Swimsuits

Indoor swimsuits: Look for swimsuits made from soft, stretchable fabrics like a blend of elastane and nylon. You can prioritise comfort and ease of movement since UV protection isn't something you need to consider.

Outdoor swimsuits: Look for swimsuits with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of 50 or more to protect your baby's skin from harmful UV rays. Long-sleeved swimsuits or full-body suits are preferable for outdoor activities.

3️⃣ Water Temperature

Warm water: For warm water environments, like heated indoor pools or tropical beaches, a standard one-piece or two-piece swimsuit is a great choice. You want something lightweight to prevent your baby from overheating.

Cool water: In cooler water, consider a neoprene wetsuit for your water baby. These suits provide insulation, helping to maintain body warmth. They’re available in different thicknesses, so choose one appropriate for the water temperature.

4️⃣ Age and Weight

Newborns to 6 months: At this age, opt for a simple, snug-fitting one-piece swimsuit that won't get in the way during those first splashes. Nappy-changing conveniences, such as snap bottoms, can be a lifesaver.

6 to 12 Months: As your water baby becomes more active, consider swimsuits with more coverage and built-in UV protection for outdoor pools or beach days.

Toddlers (1 year plus): For toddlers, swimsuits with integrated swim nappies are practical for avoiding accidents in the pool. Choose suits that offer freedom of movement for those who are more adventurous in the water.

5️⃣ Safety Features

Look for swimsuits with safety features like snap closures and adjustable straps for a secure fit. Avoid ties or strings that can become entanglement hazards.

6️⃣ Comfort

Ensure the swimsuit doesn't have rough seams or tags that could irritate your baby's skin.

7️⃣ Hygiene

For babies prone to diaper rash, choose swimsuits with moisture-wicking properties to keep their skin dry and comfortable.

By considering these factors, you can select a swimsuit that ensures your water baby is comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the water, whether it's in a Baby and Parent Swimming Lesson at Swim Max or a day at the beach.

No matter what swimwear you choose for your baby, the most important thing to remember is always to supervise them near water.
